This Too Shall Pass

Madam Yang holds her daughter's hands as they queue up at humanitarian aid distribution site. Her daughters appears to be in high spirits and turns to smile at others around her,

Madam Yang is nearly 50-years-old and lives in a village in Pengze County, Jiangxi Province. She and her husband have a son and a daughter. Their son is currently a junior college student while their daughter is 12-years-old. Madam Yang has to hold on to her daughter because she suffers from cerebral palsy which affects her ability to walk steadily. Since the birth of her daughter, Madam Yang has had to care for her daughter and is unable to work. As a result of this, the family survives on her husband's monthly salary of about RMB4,000, earned through odd jobs at construction sites.

"The water level was as high as a man's height, and my house was completely flooded We rushed to higher ground and found temporary shelter at a villager's house which was not affected by the flood. We returned home two days later, after the water receded," Madam Yang said.

In July, Pengze County was badly affected by floods due to continuous heavy downpour at the inland, as well as at the upper and lower reaches of Yangtze River. After conducting an assessment, World Vision decided to distribute 144 tons of rice, 3,600 quilts and 2,400 family kits in September to meet the needs of those affected by the floods.

"I am glad to receive these relief items. I received a bag of rice and a family kit. Thank you for your help and care," said Madam Yang.

Although their family is currently facing financial difficulties, Madam Yang believes that these challenges will pass, "Our son will be graduating from college soon. When he starts to work, this will help ease our burden and our situation will be better." (written by Addie Liao)
