I Like the Stationery Supplies in the School Bag

Nine-year-old Xiaoyuan held up the new school bag and remarked, "I enjoy the stationery supplies in the school bag the most, such as watercolor pencils and skipping ropes.”

Third-grader Xiaoyuan, together with her grandmother, mother, and elder brother, resides in Taibai Town, Wuyuan County, Jiangxi Province. Her father is outside working. Wuyuan County had severe floods in June 2022 as a result of persistent downpours. Taibai Town, Xiaoyuan’s hometown, is one of the most severely impacted.

“There were rainstorms during that period, which affected me every day when I went to school since it was difficult for me to get outside and it took longer for me to get there.” Xiaoyuan remembered the situation when the floods hit. "We had a room in our house that was also flooded in addition to the fields. We hurriedly moved the contents of the room to a higher location because the articles of daily use, farm equipment, and fertilizer inside were all drenched. The final exam was drawing near. I was concerned that not being able to attend class would have an impact on my academic achievement."

World Vision actively applied for emergency relief funds after learning about the disaster on the spot and decided to distribute 3,000 school bags, totaling RMB377,000.00, to the central primary schools in the three severely affected villages and towns of Wuyuan County to help local students affected relieve their academic stress.

Taibai Town’s ceremony for school bag distribution took place in Xiaoyuan's class on November 1, 2022. She shared the other pupils' enthusiasm when she saw the brand-new school bags and the bulky materials inside. She was ecstatic beyond words! In addition to school supplies, the school bag contained sanitary items like masks, hand sanitizer, wound pastes, toys, and safety brochures.

Xiaoyuan signed for a book bag. "I'm overjoyed that the supplies in my backpack will be useful for my studies. My family is the group I most want to share this pleasant with."

When discussing the impact the flood had on her family, Xiaoyuan remarked, "We dried the wet fertilizer for use in the sun when the floodwaters subsided. Adults in family have been hard replanting rice on our acreage after clearing mud from the fields."

“When I grow up, I want to paint so that I can show everyone beautiful things.” Xiaoyuan can capture the beauty of the world using watercolor pens and a notebook from her school bag. May everything turn out as she wishes.
